President’s Message – Shannon Connolly, MD, FAAFP

Greetings from the Los Angeles Academy of Family Physicians! I hope you are well and enjoying this beautiful summer. This past several weeks has been very eventful in the national health care arena. With multiple attempts to repeal and/or replace the Affordable Care Act, many of our patients have been at risk of losing their coverage. Over the coming months, I expect that there will be more challenges to health care access, and I encourage you to continue advocating for your patients in every possible way. Please continue to call your congressional representatives to tell them why health care must be protected. A phone call to your local representative’s office is a small but impactful thing you can do even if you have limited time.

Here at the LAAFP, we are excited to continue our partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. At our upcoming membership dinner, we will discuss how to provide preexposure HIV prophylaxis (PrEP) to our patients. PrEP is safe, highly effective, and very straightforward to prescribe. For a preview, take a look at the excellent PrEP Provider Action Kit found here. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the dinner.

Best,
Shannon Connolly
