Let’s get real.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed right now. If your Facebook feed is anything like mine, it is exploding with politics. Emotive clickbait-style writing suffocates truth and reason. Stories are biased, mean and occasionally outright fabrications. The onslaught is fatiguing. Scorekeeping ‘journalism’ should have ended sometime between November eighth and January twentieth, but it seems to be here to stay.

I think it’s time to focus on what we do right here, right now. When you connect with your patients and make a difference, savor the moment. When someone with depression comes out the other side, rejoice with them. When your patient has low A1c after years of high numbers, applaud!

Look at your colleagues; mine are selfless, capable, motivated men and women. They are real role models helping people here and now. Connect with each other, talk about your kids, your hobbies, your patients, your practice, your worries. What tools do we need to make healthcare more efficient? Accessible? Affordable? Discuss these things with your fellow doctors who are real people with real ideas – not fake people with fake news. It’s cathartic, it’s rejuvenating…it’s real.
