President’s Message – Emma Hiscocks, MD

Emma Hiscocks, MD President

Welcome to the first Los Angeles Academy of Family Physicians newsletter of 2024! We hope you have had the chance to recharge and reset since the beginning of the new year. Your local chapter of the state and national Academy of Family Physicians is here to support all family physicians, including residents and medical students interested in Family Medicine. We have been busy planning some exciting programming over the past month. But first of all, please follow us on Instagram: @the_laafp. We hope to connect with more of you through this new account!

Part of LAAFP’s mission is to encourage and assist young physicians with preparing, qualifying, and establishing themselves as family physicians. This year, to further the mission and connect with our local residents–and medical students too–LAAFP is hosting our inaugural Family Medicine Career Event: Leap into Post-Residency Careers which will provide an overview of the job hunt and include a panel open to your questions. Please join us this Leap Day, Thursday, February 29th at 7:00 PM for our virtual event. Although aimed at those in training, this is open to all those interested in attending. Add to your calendar and join us! Zoom Link

Advocacy is an integral part of supporting family physicians. I strongly encourage you to consider attending CAFP’s All Member Advocacy Meeting in Sacramento this April 13-14th with Lobby Day on April 15th. AMAM Information. This annual event includes two days of advocacy and leadership training followed by an opportunity to meet your state representatives to share your experience and perspective as a family doctor. AMAM 2024 will focus on utilizing a team-based approach to advance health equity. Come learn, connect, and advocate! LAAFP offers resident and student member scholarships to AMAM.

Lastly, I’d like to sincerely thank our outgoing LAAFP President, Dr. Gregory Lewis, for his dedicated service this past year. Dr. Lewis created a solid platform of resident and student engagement we are able to build upon this year and will be featured as a panelist at our career event. As we look forward to the coming year, please feel free to reach out to us at any time, as we are here for you.
